Hi Creative Friends!

Today, we're diving into the essential process of saving your Adobe Illustrator creations as JPEG (JPG) files, with a special focus on optimizing them for microstock and artist marketplace uploads.

JPEG, short for Joint Photographic Experts Group, is a widely used raster graphic format. It's renowned for its ability to efficiently compress images, making it ideal for photographs and complex artwork. Files saved as JPEG typically have extensions like .jpg, .jpeg, .jfif, or .jpe, and their MIME type is image/jpeg.

The Advantage of JPEG:

File Size Efficiency: JPEG's compression capabilities significantly reduce file sizes, making them easier to store and share online.

Broad Compatibility: It's universally supported by web browsers, image viewers, and various software applications.

Suitable for Complex Images: JPEG excels at representing images with smooth color gradients and intricate details, like photographs and detailed illustrations.

Saving Your Illustrator Artwork as JPEG (JPG) for Microstocks and Marketplaces:

1. Initiate Export:

- Go to File > Export > Export As.

- Enter your desired file name and choose the destination folder.

- In the "Save as type" dropdown menu, select "JPEG (*.JPG)".

- Crucially, check "Use Artboards" and specify the "Range" if you're working with multiple artboards. This ensures you export the correct artboards.

- Click "Export".

2. Optimize Export Settings:

- Color Model: RGB. This is essential for web-based platforms and microstocks.

- Quality: "10" and "Maximum". This ensures the highest possible image quality with minimal compression artifacts.

- Compression Method: "Baseline (Standard)". This guarantees compatibility with the widest range of web browsers and platforms.

- Resolution: "150 ppi". While higher resolutions are often preferred, 150 ppi is a good starting point for many microstocks. If your illustration is a simple icon or graphic, some platforms may reject lower resolutions.

- Smoothing: "Best text quality (with hinting)" (if you have more text).

3. Click "OK".

Key Considerations for Microstock Success:

- Always check the specific guidelines of each microstock platform you're submitting to, as requirements may vary.

- Ensure your artwork is visually appealing and meets the technical standards of the platform.

- Double check your exported JPEGs before uploading.
